Trondheim Town Square
Smart rainwater management solves more problems in the cities
A modern green square with appreciation for the historic elements
Trondheim Town Square has been around since the city planner, Johan Caspar de Cicignon redesigned the city after the great fire of 1681.
In 2020 a refurbishment by the municipality of Trondheim together with Agraff Architects have transformed Trondheim Town Square into a modern green square, which still shows a great appreciation for the historic elements of the 400-year-old town centre.

The Vision for Trondheim Town square: A Green New Initiative
There was a desire to incorporate more plants and trees in the square and to create a centre where both tourists and citizens want to spend time and attend the many events throughout the year: both planned and spontaneous.
Through a new and comprehensive construction plan, a modern solution for creating a dynamic city centre was found, all while commemorating the legacy of Cicigon.
The plan to renew the 16,000 m2 square included an initiative to ensure that it was rich with vegetation - more plants and trees in the centre would create a space that is welcoming.

Milford’s Contribution: RootSpace, ReRoot, and RootRain
Milford’s task was to supply our tree planting solution, which is designed to ensure the most optimal growth conditions for urban trees.
It is not an easy feat to plant trees in urban spaces. When trees are planted in impervious surfaces, they do not have the same growing conditions as in nature and have limited access to water and oxygen.
To tackle this issue, Milford has delivered our RootSpace root-friendly soil cells (Milford DK, SE, NO, ENG) as part of our tree planting solution for urban trees, which also consists of our ReRoot root barrier (Milford DK, SE, NO, ENG) and RootRain watering system (Milford DK, SE, NO, ENG).

Rootspace in the square
RootSpace is a modular root-friendly soil cell system for tree pits, which ensures an uncompressed soul volume for the tree roots, even under hard surfaces. The modules can be clicked together and form a robust, open matrix structure. In cities, underground pipes are often needed for water, electricity, and gas – RootSpace’s modules creates room for the implementation of pipes of up to 250 mm in diameter.
Furthermore, the lid for RootSpace forms a secure layer of air above the tree pit and ensures the roots get water and oxygen. The lid is applied with a click-mechanism and the RootSpace soil cells can be built with one or more layers, depending on your needs.
You can fill RootSpace with the growing-medium best suited to the tree being planted – this means it is possible to take the needs of each individual tree species into account thanks to the open-cell construction.

A welcoming city centre
Growing trees is especially difficult in Trondheim Town Square as they need to be planted amongst impervious surfaces, and a new water and drainage system underground.
By using RootSpace, Milford ensures better ventilation and water to the trees all while being made from recycled plastic. In addition, according to Wyatt Harding, the CEO of Milford, RootSpace was chosen for Trondheim Town Square due to the size of the growth cell. As such, larger trees at higher quantities were able to be planted – in fact, twenty-one trees were planted all around the edges of the square.
With RootSpace growth cells, ReRoot root barrier, and RootRain irrigation system, Milford was successfully able to introduce new green zones in Trondheim to make the city centre much more welcoming for both tourists and citizens.
