Smart rainwater management solves more problems in the cities

In the coming years, many larger cities have to come up with solutions for the challenges of increasing amounts of rainwater and more extreme weather. By implementing solutions that help protect densely populated and developed areas against flooding, the development of the square serves as an example to be followed when the rest of the city is to be climate-proofed. By actively making use of a city’s green areas in the fight against pollution and securing the city against cloudbursts, smart ways of handling rainwater solve a great deal of the problems, cities today are facing.

A new street in a historic setting

Æbeløgade is a new street consisting of 10 exclusive and high-quality townhouses, located in the Øgade neighbourhood in Aarhus close to the city’s botanical garden. To make the most of the prominent location and historic context, the architects applied a reversed design approach compared to most residential developments.

In 2021, Æbeløen was awarded “Stadsarkitekternes Særpris” by Aarhus municipality as a strong example of excellent and thorough urban design.

Distinctive and historic architectural elements

Passing down Æbeløgade, you are met by historic elements such as tilted roof pitches, accentuated dormer windows, and brick facades.

With Æbeløen, the architects have merged the past and the present by reinterpreting the Øgade area’s distinctive and historic architectural elements and turned them into a new contemporary Øgade architecture that builds on the area’s inherent atmosphere to form a dynamic and varied expression.

The townhouses are held in beautiful color combinations and are made from high-quality materials.

A green and inviting environment to explore

The botanical garden’s green and blue elements are dragged into the courtyard and many of the old trees in the courtyard have been preserved. Connecting paths invite the residents and passers-by to explore the recreational spaces and green oases spread around the area.

Our root-friendly soil cell system StrataCells (Milford DK, SE,NO,ENG) ensured that new-planted trees will gain the most efficient and uncompressed volume of soil per tree and provide optimal ventilation for the roots.

The trees in Æbeløen will now have a long and healthy life to the joy of the residents and people making their way around the area.

Great cooperation with CEBRA Architecture and Buus landscape gardener

Multiple townhouse façades in Æbeløen are turning into green flourishing walls, and will act as a 3-dimensional piece of art adding life to the townhouse facades. With time, a dense vegetation cover will be suitable for birds and insects to hide in.

CEBRA Architecture worked with three types of facade greening. They chose fast-growing and climate adaptive twining plants such as Dutchman’s pipe and Oriental Bittersweet.

"We choose to go with the Milford wire system (Milford DK, SE, NO, ENG). The design is discrete and doesn’t take up too much focus from the architecture. It’s extremely strong and long-lasting. Last but not least it’s flexible and can be extended in all directions, which makes it easy to use in different contexts", says Mikkel Frost, Partner and architect at CEBRA.

Rasmus Fugl from Buus landscape gardeners was the project leader on establishing the green areas of Æbeløen. On choosing Milford’s wire system as a solution, he mentions:

"Milford's wire system was the best suitable product for this kind of task. The wire system is very easy to install, and all the parts are there on time. We had a good cooperation and dialogue prior to the project in order to find the best possible wire system solution. Æbeløen is an exciting project with many neat details."

At-level access and optimal ventilation of the foundation

As a finishing element around the houses, we contributed with our threshold channel Canyon (Milford DK, NO, ENG) made in stainless steel, ideal for installing around buildings that require at-level access.

Canyon ensures optimal ventilation of the foundation and easy access for inspections and repairs.

Canyon has been developed in close collaboration with construction experts, leading architects, and contractors and solves all requirements and recommendations that most new buildings have.

Made from 100% recycled industrially sourced plastic, the console can easily be clicked into the channel and increases stability through the whole system.
