Smart rainwater management solves more problems in the cities

In the coming years, many larger cities have to come up with solutions for the challenges of increasing amounts of rainwater and more extreme weather. By implementing solutions that help protect densely populated and developed areas against flooding, the development of the square serves as an example to be followed when the rest of the city is to be climate-proofed. By actively making use of a city’s green areas in the fight against pollution and securing the city against cloudbursts, smart ways of handling rainwater solve a great deal of the problems, cities today are facing.

A climate-proof neighbourhood

With a vision to make Østerbro the first climate proof quarter of Copenhagen, today, Skt. Kjelds Plads is an exemplary case of how innovative solutions help create both functional and aesthetically pleasing urban spaces

Special solution of local rainwater harvesting

Skt. Kjelds Plads is a lovely and recreational space for the people who live in and use the area. But at the same time, it is a local rainwater harvesting that protects the borough from floods. Usually, our KerbCell™ will direct surplus water from the streets into surrounding plant beds.

But in this case, we developed – in collaboration with the project’s engineer – a custom-made solution, which absorbs the water directly from the footway and redirects it to the square’s rainwater harvesting. Here, the rainwater can be redeployed for watering of trees and plants in the green urban space.

KerbCell™

The construction of our KerbCell™ enables handling of surface water in different ways depending on the season. The system leads surface water to the local rainwater harvesting for the large part of the year. During summer, it is utilised for watering, while the sluice can be closed during winter, preventing salt from the streets to enter and damage the system. This way, the KerbCell™ system reduces the strain on the sewer system in the case of more intense rainfall.
