Smart rainwater management solves more problems in the cities

In the coming years, many larger cities have to come up with solutions for the challenges of increasing amounts of rainwater and more extreme weather. By implementing solutions that help protect densely populated and developed areas against flooding, the development of the square serves as an example to be followed when the rest of the city is to be climate-proofed. By actively making use of a city’s green areas in the fight against pollution and securing the city against cloudbursts, smart ways of handling rainwater solve a great deal of the problems, cities today are facing.

Trees forming a rain bed

Storgata in Oslo is one of the oldest and most busy streets in the Norwegian capital. In 2018, the street got a general facelift and the street’s hundred-year-old drains were optimized to withstand a future with more heavy rains.

The trees planted along the street not only add recreational value. They are forming a rain bed that helps infiltrate the rainwater locally in the ground through the permeable pavement in our tree grilles. The trees also soak up water and prevent flooding.

Urban tree planting systems to protect the trees

It can be a challenge to combine tree planting, heavy loads from traffic, and rainwater management. You need smart solutions to create the best growth conditions in an environment like Storgata.

We helped protect the young trees and secure optimal growth conditions by designing the Adapta tree grille (Milford DK, SE, NO) in close collaboration with Sweco Norway. The system helps direct rainwater to the rain bed and prevents trash to flow into the rain bed.

We also contributed with our Sahara tree guards (Milford DK, SE, NO, ENG). The guards ensure that the trees are less vulnerable to vandalism, damage from bicycles, cars, and electric scooters in the first years after they have been planted.

Last but not least, our root-friendly Stratacells (Milford DK, SE, NO, ENG) give the tree roots optimal growth conditions in an environment, where it would normally be impossible for them to grow.

Recreational urban space prepared for the future climate

What started out as a challenge combining traffic, aesthetics, and climate changes, ended up as a good example of how unique solutions and a close corporation can create recreational and inviting green urban spaces and prepare an environment for the future climate. Together with upgraded sidewalks, new tram stops, and a new road foundation and pavement, the street has now been modernized to the joy of the many people using Storgata.
